Don’t Wait For New Years to Make Resolutions – Set Your Goals Now!

Starting a New Year’s resolution gives us time to reflect on where we are and where we want to be. But why just do that once a year? Setting smaller, more easily attainable goals gives you a much better chance of success.

Many people focus on 21 days to create/eliminate a habit. For me, using the beginning of the month and extending it to the end of the month makes the chances of success that much better. Also, as soon as the first of the month rolls around I am automatically reminded to continue/reaffirm my goals or create new ones.

Breaking Down Large Goals to Make Them Achievable
Goals can be anything you want. The most important thing is that you may be able to complete something tied to the goal in 30 days. So if your goals are large and will take more than 30 days, break them down into manageable goals. Create smaller achievable goals that tied together will help you achieve the larger goal. So, if you want to lose 20 pounds, focus on losing 5 pounds a month over the course of 4 months. Losing 20 pounds in one month would be very ambitions (and probably not very healthy) but losing 20 pounds in 4 months is a more realistic goal. The outcome if successful is the same, but you have a better chance of completing the goal if you break it down.

A Word About Balance
As with anything, balance is always important. Be it goals or something else, you should never focus on just one area of your life. Just think, if all you do is work and never play, the quality of your life is not as good as if you work hard and play equally as hard. To make sure you focus on your life in a balanced way, set small goals in different areas. The most common areas to focus on are health, relationship, finances, and personal.

Increase Changes of Success by Sharing Your Goals
Research has shown that you have a much better chance of success if you tell your goals to someone else or even better, if you partner with someone to achieve your goals. So share the goals you are comfortable sharing. Better yet, if you can find someone with the same goals, work together to achieve them.
