How to Stop Being Your Own Worst Critic

When you look in the mirror, what do you think?

If you have you ever stopped to listen to your own thoughts / reviews of yourself – it can be very enlightening.

Just imagine if you were to speak to your friends the way you speak to yourself? If you looked at them and criticized their hair, made them turn around a few times, made a face at their outfit. Think about if they said something and you responded with “that was stupid, I hate when you say that.” OK sure, some friends are very honest with each other and feel free to say things like that on occasion, but what if you said things like that every day throughout the day?

How many friends would you have if were forever telling them what they did wrong, or how dumb they were, or how silly they looked? Chances are good the numbers would be dwindling. So why do so many people treat themselves that way?

It’s OK to Recognize Your Imperfections
After all, no one is perfect. We all have things we want to change. So recognize the things you want to change and make them into personal goals.

Accept That There are Things You Can’t Change
Some things are just out of your control. There is nothing you can do about them so you can either get upset or accept them. Getting upset will not help you change anything so its time to accept those things.

Turn Your Negative Thoughts Positive
The next time you have a negative thought, focus instead on a talent, skill or positive attribute.

…and stop saying things to yourself that you would never say to one of your friends!

Try this

  1. For today only, write down any negative thought you have about yourself. You may not get to list them all but you will certainly get enough to start with.
  2. At the end of the day, cross off all of those thoughts about something you can’t change.
  3. Those things that you didn’t cross off are things you can change, so they can be turned into personal goals! Select 1 of them and start making a change immediately.
